In 1899, the international stage celebrity Sarah Bernhardt set out to tackle Hamlet. In writing this rollicking high comedy and human drama, playwright Theresa Rebek highlights Bernhardt’s courage in taking on a man’s role, and this role in particular. Hamlet could make or break Bernhardt’s career. Mark Twain said of this unique woman, “There are five kinds of actresses: bad actresses, fair actresses, good actresses’, great actresses – and then there is Sarah Bernhardt.”
